Lab Work: Assemble and Format IA

Good morning, folks!

We are in the lab today to assemble all the pieces of your IA into one document and format it properly.

You should follow the layout of the sample IA (link at left).

Steps:
1. Copy and paste parts A-E into one document (google or word document)
2. Double-space and use a 12 point font- Times or Arial
3. Be sure to use the appropriate heading for each section
4. Don't forget title page!
5. Create a works cited section in Turabian format
6. Make a "table of contents" last- some of you may not get to it, and that is O.K.

Save it/send it to yourself.

Due tomorrow (printed)!

Lab Work: Part D: Analysis

Today we are in the lab to work on Part D of your IA: Analysis.

The analysis portion will probably be the most familiar part of the IA in that you are being asked to do something you do with every history paper: Make an argument about your topic that can be supported by the facts in your summary of evidence.

Your arguments will vary; some of you may disagree with a common interpretation of an event, "It can be argued that the Bay of Pigs Invasion was actually a success when measured by x, x, and x."

Some of you may compare and contrast different historical interpretations (your source) of an event: "While Hieser argues that Sturgis was founded with an emphasis on global education, Andre presents evidence that Sturgis was established to provide an alternative to the local public school."

Some of you may have a more traditional thesis (no example needed- you do this probably 3x a week!).

Head over to the link on the left (Spring IA Guidelines) where there is more info about Part D. We will go through it together; then you will have time to work.

Lab work: Summary of Evidence DAY 2

Hi Sophomores,

I am home sick, but everyone did a wonderful job working independently on their IA Part B: Summary of Evidence yesterday. Today is the LAST day we will have to work on it in school. It is due this Friday.

Another reminder: A few of you have mentioned that you are still trying to find sources and doing research. I recommend that you move past that stage and start your summary of evidence.

HW tonight will also be up on my website. It is basically an outline of the info in your textbook on the Berlin Airlift. We will be back in the classroom tomorrow.

Email me if you have q's.

Lab work: Summary of Evidence

We are in the lab today to have time to work on your IA Part B: Summary of Evidence. This is essentially a summary of your research notes in a logical order.

Basic requirements:
  1. Typed
  2. Research question at the top of the page.
  3. Approx. 400 words
  4. Bullets (complete sentences) or paragraphs
  5. Footnotes as citations in Turabian format
  6. Due this Friday
Whether you use bullets or paragraphs, you will need to divide the evidence into sections that are relevant to your research question. See this sample for an idea of what your bullets should be like.

After you read this, please create a document, save it, and get started.

Remember, if you are going to google doc me, it has to have your name and summary of evidence.

Secondly, we are here to continue working on researching and taking notes for your IA in the specified format. See handout for the specific format (also available in google docs).

This IA project will be ongoing for the next 4 weeks. It is imperative that you also work on it at home as well as our time in school.

Wiki Answers on US WW2 Mobilization

Are you familiar with wikis?

A wiki is essentially an editable type of webpage. It's based on the idea that users of the internet can be CONTRIBUTORS as well as CONSUMERS. You like that, right?

It requires very good manners (for example, not deleting other peoples' work).

So, I was browsing some topics on wikianswers.com and I found two questions for our class. In class today, we are going to work in medium-sized cooperative groups to improve the answers that are already on this wikianswers reagrding WW2.

Question #1: link How did the US mobilize to fight in WW2?
Question #2: link How did US mobilization for WW2 affect women and minorities?

Go to the links and then IMPROVE the existing answers with information from the the textbook.

Your GOAL is to create the most complete, detailed, comprehensive answer.

Radio Broadcast Assignment Links

Suggested websites to search for information on your topic: the BBC, PBS, the New York Times, etc. You do not need to reply only on scholarly sources, though you certainly can.

If you are having trouble locating information about your topic, here is a website with links to several useful articles. Note: the website is rather old, so some of the links (to the BBC, for example) are expired. In that case, just go directly to the BBC site and search the archives.

Classwork (in Lab)

Yesterday we talked about the Social Security program created under FDR and you read two proposed changes to it in the DBQ for homework.

Your assignment is to create a thoughtful, accurate 5-paragraph essay essay paper examining both sides of the social security dilemma. In this essay, your aim is to demonstrate that you understand the problem Social Security is experiencing and the proposals that have been made to fix it.

Extra information about the problem and proposed solutions is contained within this handout.

The DBQ and essay description is here: DBQ

If you are reading this, that must mean the computer lab schedule got worked out ok, so I would like you to write this essay on google docs and share it with me as a collaborator. DO THIS IMMEDIATELY when you start the document. Title it with your last name and Social Security (e.g. Johnson SS Paper). Due at the end of class.
